“A while back I was sent an article, based on scientific studies, that flipped my world of skincare upside down. Recent scientific studies have discovered why healthy skin is an essential part of longevity.”

Your skin changes with the seasons – and winter calls for more hydration, more nourishment and extra protection. Here are Karmameju founder Mette Skjærbæk’s personal winter skincare rituals in 5 simple steps.

No two days are the same in my skincare routine – check in with your skin is my most important advice. If you sleep in a cool bedroom during winter, your skin will be less dehydrated than if the radiators are on full blast. If you're heading to the beach in windy, cold weather, protect your skin with nourishing plant oils. If your skin feels extra “thirsty”, make sure to add lots of extra hydration on those days. The weather, our activities, our hormones – everything affects how our largest organ, the skin, feels on any given day.
That said, there are some non-negotiables in my winter skincare ritual, which you’ll find below. Some rituals follow me 365 days a year. In my facial routine, it includes daily dry brushing with RENEW and a muslin cloth for evening cleansing.
Always care for the face, neck, and chest – what we at Karmameju call “the extended face.”
Your skin, your care – here’s my ritual this winter:
Step 1
I balance my skin’s pH level after the shower with HERO pH solution. All skincare begins with skin in good condition, and skin thrives when its pH – the acid mantle – is in balance. Our tap water in Denmark is alkaline, which the skin does not like. If your skin is dry or dermatologically challenged, never skip HERO – all skin health begins with a balanced pH.

Step 2
My 51 birthdays are most visible around my eyes. I do my best to hold time at bay with COUTURE eye cream, which fulfils all needs of the delicate eye area: it plumps, protects, smooths, stimulates, and nourishes.

Step 3
INFINITY serum-lotion means hydration, hydration, hydration – and in generous amounts. I also love our FIRM, SHIELD, and CLEAR serums, which I alternate between, but INFINITY is my daily dose of electrolytic hydration for the skin. INFINITY is for both face and body.

Step 4
Daytime: BB face cream – day cream, sunscreen, and light foundation all in one. I use sunscreen all year round. It’s the most important step in avoiding premature signs of ageing. The cream nourishes and protects. SPF 30 shields the skin from UV. Colour pigments help even out redness and skin tone irregularities. A perfect 3-in-1 that simply makes me feel prettier.
Evening: VELVET face cream – to provide the skin with the right ingredients to support its important overnight regeneration work.

Step 5
Golden drops of GLOW face oil. I love oils, and our skin – our “leather” – truly benefits from them. They make the skin soft and supple, and nothing protects the skin better against wind, frost, and cold.
In the morning: I use oil as the final, outer layer. I warm it between my palms and gently press it on top of the BB cream once it’s had time to absorb.
In the evening: I apply GLOW face oil, so I can use it for a face massage, and finish with the VELVET face cream.
Whether you’re hibernating in winter or it’s the season where you blossom and feel more energised, extra hydration and fats are essential for those of us who experience cold winters. Moisture, lipids, and SPF are the three elements that, according to the latest research, contribute to a longer, and healthier life.
